Level Up!

"An enjoyable game"

submission: Level Up!
date: December 3, 2009

I enjoyed the game. It reminded me a bit of the platforming fox game, and maybe of the Curses game as well. The story was interesting enough to keep me playing, although it was starting to get old having to sit through the same interactions each time. (due to memory failure) Also, it could get tedious interacting with a character, when trying to determine if you met the requirement. *cough* hulker *cough* I noticed that changes were made to the "air recovery" skill. Might this affect the earning og the "Hardy" skill? It seemed like I didn't have any trouble with it yesterday, but I'm having trouble with it now.

I think the nightmare sequence was just right. It was difficult, but it wasn't too bad. I was getting a bit frustrated with it, until I realized that the instructions for solving it were included in the game. This helped greatly. I look forward to the new game. It has some cool features that are missing from this one. It's a little hard getting used to the lack of a jump control. This means that the level has to be carefully designed, or you could conceivably end up in an area that you would be unable to get out of. It also creates the feeling of a scripted game with limited choices. Even so, I like the styles and animations. The limited glimpse of the new story looks promising. I'm not sure I'd be able to complete it, though. (I ran out of ammo) TDA

We Are NativeAmericanCats

"I guess, you have to make your own kind of music."

date: October 26, 2009

You can't use anyone else's anymore. It's disappointing that an entire flash cartoon had to be removed because of one little song towards the end. I suppose one day radios will be illegal, or we'll need a license to use them. Until then, I'm considering stocking up on cassette tapes.

As for the flash, it entertained me. It was an intriguing documentary into the life of Native American cats. It opened my eyes to the problems that all such cats have -- such as overcoming stereotypes and fighting alcoholism. It enlightened me on their customs and their culture. It also provided some LOLs.

Pokemon HD: Ep 1

"About four years too late."

submission: Pokemon HD: Ep 1
date: October 18, 2009

This might have been funny a few years ago, when HD monitors were more rare and expensive. As it is, it's extremely hard to find a monitor that does not support widescreen format. It's hard to even find 17" monitors. Many video cards don't even have the 15 pin VGA connector anymore. Furthermore, it's hard to find a CD-ROM drive on a new computer.

This is just another fake collab that doesn't even bother to offer poorly drawn stick figures to get the point across. You did pad it with sound files to bring the file size up, so you get half a point for creativity. In addition, it does have graphics. I guess, that's a plus. In total, I'm voting 5 (stars) for your effort.

Obligatory constructive criticism: You could have included a poorly drawn stick-figure movie for those with "inferior" monitors.

Balloon Boy Adventure

"It did its job"

date: October 18, 2009

Was it too soon? I don't think so. Newgrounds is always the place for silly games based on current events. This game adequately paid tribute to the 'Balloon Boy'. The playability was good. The replayability wasn't so good, because it was just more birds and nothing new. I did get adequate entertainment the first time around, though.

Things I might improve:

There is plenty of video of this event that you could capture. You might try capturing the balloon from a few angles, and make the balloon spin while it's moving.

You might try adding levels to the game. You could make it a timed game, and have it eventually run out of helium and land for each level.

You might try adding a few more powerups for variety.

Maybe, you could also add a helicopter or two.

For what it is, the game is just fine. Who knows, maybe you'll get a mention in the next NG history flash.

Miami Shark

"Excellent"

submission: Miami Shark
date: October 9, 2009

I wasn't sure that this game would be any good. There are a lot of games on Newgrounds that are based on a clever idea, but the execution leaves a little to be desired. However, when I saw who made this game, I knew it would be good. I have always enjoyed the submissions from this offer, ever since playing Stardust way back when.

Even so, I had no idea how good the game would be. This shall be first 10 that I've ever handed out, for I can't imagine any way the game could be improved. Still, one needs a certain type of sense of humor to appreciate the game. I can understand some rating it lower.

Concept:
I like the concept of the game. It was definitely unexpected, though the topic might be considered current. As an American, I can relate because of the increase in shark sightings in the States. In addition, I think there was a ludicrous movie tribute to shark/monster movies recently...

Gameplay:
The gameplay was original, fast-paced, smooth, and fun. It was enjoyable playing this game. Not being a hard core gamer, I prefer timed type of games to those that require an intricate set of moves in order to avoid dying. There was plenty to do in the game. Also, being timed, you don't have to endure hours of near identical levels in order to win. Also, it is a repeatable experience, since one can always attempt to improve next time.

Humor:
The humor was just my style. I enjoyed the concept of pulling jumbo jets into the sea. I think this has been the most fun I've had with a game since "Rampage".

Conclusion:
I probably wouldn't have minded this game being a bit longer, but I liked that the game ended after a certain amount of time. For one that doesn't constantly play games, a game like this gives such a person a sense of accomplishment without making that person want to give up from excessive dying. Others my have a different opinion of this game, but in my subjective opinion, this was worthy of a 10 to me. --TDA

The Disney Collab

"It was ok"

submission: The Disney Collab
date: October 3, 2009

I think the low ratings are a bit unfair, since the animation was decent. It did have a few amusing moments at times. However, I didn't feel it was worth a 9 or a 10. My favorite clip was the first one. That one seemed to have the most thought put into it. I also enjoyed the header sequence. The Fantasia clip reminded me of when I first saw Fantasia in the theater. It ended up being the only Disney movie that I ever slept through.

None of the clips were particularly bad, but only the first one really impressed me humor-wise. Many of the more humorous clips seemed to be too short. Others had mostly generic, gross, immature, humor. The collab was an above average effort. However, I might suggest checking out "Bambee", if a sequel is planned. I think Bambee clearly shows the potential of the Disney-Parody concept. Animation was good. Next time, try just a bit harder on the stories. I understand the concept of shorts, but many of the shorts seemed incomplete and too short.

To be fair, many of these wouldn't have been so bad, if similar jokes hadn't already been used in so many other flashes. The Cinderella animation did show some promise. I think the generic, exaggerated, Shatner impression ruined it a bit, though. All submissions were passable. Most of them could have used a little refinement, though. That's just my opinion.

[ClockDay09] Running NG

"I thought it was amusing"

date: August 16, 2009

For those that are a little confused and lost about all the clock flashes, I will say that the "Clock phenomenon" is really just a gigantic in joke -- especially now, years later. Although clock flashes are a pretty long standing tradition on Newgrounds, I think that clocks are starting to lose their significance. It has been a long time, since I've seen a clock submission on the front page other than on Clock Day. Even this submission wasn't submitted by an official "clock person", or crew member. Even so, I think that this was as fitting a tribute as any "true" clock flash.

To get an idea of what inspired all this madness, I suggest looking up "Strawberry Clock" -- not the character, but the flash author. I think most clock flashes can be traced to this source. Clock flashes were originally parodies of this fine flash author's work. They are typically marked by immature, crude, and sometimes random humor, as well as CGA. Although, the genre has evolved a bit.

While I realize that clocks aren't everyone's cup of tea, I personally think that complaining about clock submissions on Clock Day is similar to complaining about Halloween flash cartoons on Halloween. It's not like they inexplicably end up on the front page each month anymore. I'm flexible enough to recognize the humor in this flash, even though it is a clock flash. I decided to give it a 9. Although clock flashes don't typically entertain me as much as they used to, the animation was good. The story was decent, and I got some good chuckles.

Awesome Invaders!

"A fitting tribute/parody"

submission: Awesome Invaders!
date: August 8, 2009

Dude u totally ripped off egoraptor's concept, and that's what I like about it. I think the fact that you were having a little fun at Ego's expense was missed by some. I think you captured the essence of of what a lot of his "Awesome" animations are all about without taking things too seriously. It was short but enjoyable. It was just long enough to make your point.

"Eh..."

date: July 27, 2009

Even though Ego did the voicing, I thoroughly enjoyed this. This submission perfectly caught the essence of what a parody is all about. It is probably the first parody of a parody that I have thoroughly enjoyed 100%. This very closely followed the original, so it was very familiar. I loved all the twists on the original idea. I'm a big fan of bad punic humor, so this was enjoyable for me. One thing that might have made it more interesting would be to have schtuff float to the top as the shark was "passing chum". Maybe not. Just a suggestion.

"This entertained me"

date: July 26, 2009

And that's about all you can do, isn't it?
About the only thing that could have improved it is having the mecha do "shave and a haircut" with his sword swish. Other than that, it was good way to use up a little spare time.
